interesting implication for social networking?

As I was reading The “Black Swan”, Taleb (the author) discussed the Matthew Effect which has some interesting implications in the new world of social media.  If you think about how we link to each other on mutliple sites and pass along information, it is entirely reasonable to see this “effect” in our space as well as in the scientific community that Robert Merton wrote about in 1968.   It is where we get the phrase, “the rich get richer”.  Merton basically stated that the more well-known the scientist, the more likely he/she would receive credit for research that may not necessarily have originated with them.  Essentially, once you are well known, the more well known you become.
