Adapt or die!

“The problems that exist in the world today cannot be solved by the level of thinking that created them.”

                                                                                                    – Albert Einstein

This is our reality and yet many still do not grasp the impact of this reality.  Our ability to be successful in anything we do will now be determined by only one thing…our ability to adapt!  Adaptability will become the foundation of success because without it, all of our other skills will not matter.  I was having a conversation last week with the managing partner of a local creative agency and this is exactly the topic of conversation.  He had come to recognize that it would no longer be periods of change followed by longer periods of stability.  It was now a continuous series of changes with little to no time of stability.

We would all do well to read Kurt Lewin’s model of change that works on the metaphor of an ice cube being thawed, changed, and then refrozen.  This has now been update to say that once we are able to modify the required behavior, we should only refreeze to the point of “slushiness” and not a hard freeze because it will not be long until another change is required.  This is world we live in and things will only speed up from here.

Think about this statement from W. Edward Deming, “Change is not necessary, survival is optional.”
